And yet "Heart of a Dog" is not a dirge. It is not a film made by someone who has gone underground to avoid the recent tragedies of her life. On the contrary, it accepts life's twists and turns and embraces the fact that these unexpected detours on life's journey are unavoidable.

Watching a small dog picking out accidental tunes on an electronic keyboard is a squealy delight, but it's the haunting recognition that (as David Foster Wallace wrote) "every love story is a ghost story" that strikes the most affecting chord. Narrated by Anderson herself, Heart of a Dog is less a film than a stream of consciousness musing on life, death and everything in between. Heart of a Dog picks up on a number of Big Science's themes and deepens them with musings on love, language and loss.
